PS3 vs PC
#1

in the gaming scene and processing.
Had this conversation with my friends we said PS3 is much stringer in all aspects, but i was not satisfied by the answers.
1) PS3 is too cheap to beat a high end thousand of dollars worth PC
2) PS3 uses a different type of CPU (cell) than a PC that dosnt mean its better (each cell core is slower than a normal CPU core)
3)Nvidia is the same company that makes PS3 graphic card and PC graphic cards so how is there such a big difference.
Who do u think is better(for specific task gaming computing etc) and why?
thanks

I'm a PC FUN BOY so my choice is PC off course ...
PC & PS3 cannot be compared in hardware power, PC will always win...
Yes nvidia make GPU's for both platforms but look at the size of GTX280 or 9800GX2 and you'll realize what is the difference between GPU for PC and GPU for PS3

I was "home-schooled" (NES & Genesis), so I always lean towards the console experience. B)

though, cracking SSL with a PS3 cluster actually sounded pretty neat to me! =P

I dont wanna know whats better to buy or more useful.
I'm talking about hardware capabilities of ps3 vs PC as of 5/1/09
not the future not the past...
wich one is stronger in the gaming arena (hardware wise) and brute force calculations.

PC is stronger and can run games that PS3 can dream about.
But in the price range of PS3 every PC is gonna be outperformed

That depends on what is in your "PC". There are all sorts of PCs built today.
Do you have a particular model in mind?

My biggest sector of winning is the fact that PS3s can perform more FPO than any PC.
Case in point; Folding@Home. The total power of all the PS3s running it WAY exceeds the total power of all the PCs running it.
There have been less than 20 million PS3s sold, and there are over a billion PCs in the world.

PS3 would beat every '06 PC with its hardware, but there are new equipments for PC (new CPU's, GPU's), pretty unfair
If PS3 Hardware was up to date, it would win against the PCs we now have

System:
CPU: C2D E6550 @3.00 GHZ
RAM: 8192 Corsair 6400CL5
HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda + 200 GB Samsung
GPU: Zotac NViDiA GTX 295
Power Util.: beQuiet! Dark Power Pro 750W
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit

I doubt that. How many electricity will need PS3 to beat todays PC beasts??? And also is gonna be a big box (not console with acceptable dimensions)...

This thread is starting to become senseless. As I stated before in order for this to make any sense you will have to pick a specific computer to put up against the PS3 to weigh the scales, so to speak.
The question originally posed makes as much sense as saying what has more harddrive space my PS3 or my Laptop. You cannot not ask such a vague question and want a specific answer. You certainly can't debate this without the facts either.

and check the odds. i am talking about the "best" pc with today technology. not custom OC edition.
plus a high end laptop has more hdd space than any PS3. even the macbook has more hd space than a ps3 and thats not even a high end laptop, you see its possible.
the question here is comparing the technology available for PC's today vs PS3.

No, my ~$500 quad core build (not counting the price of the monitor and speakers) outperforms the PS3 by a long shot, in terms of graphics/game performance. I can run GTA IV maxed out, except for the view distance, at a higher resolution than the PS3 (after commandline optimizations). I doubt PS3 games would utilize the 8 logical cores provided by the Cell processor, and I OC'd my CPU to 3GHz, so that brings it on par with the Cell's speed, probably even faster than it. With 4GB of RAM, I blow away the 512MB of XDR in the PS3, even though it might be faster in terms of operating speeds. Dual 200GB hard drives should be 1 on 1 with a PS3 with a replaced HDD. I even built this one half a year ago, but the PS3 has been out for longer.
TL;DR: You can get a similar, if not better system than the PS3 at a similar price point.
That being said, PC > PS3, of course depending on the specifications. There are a few PS3 exclusives that are pretty sweet, but considering the low number of RTS and other games not readily available on the PS3, it tilts the scale in favor of the PC.
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3GHz
Mobo: Gigabyte P35-DS3L
RAM: 4GB Corsair DDR2-800 @ 667MHz, 3-3-3-9, 2.2v
GPU: XFX GTX 260 Core 216 @ 666/1404/1150 (Black Edition BIOS flash)
HDD: 1x Maxtor 200GB SATA 3Gb/s 7200RPM 8MB cache; 1x Seagate 640GB SATA 3Gb/s 7200RPM 32MB cache

Than you have pretty much answered your own question.

Your $500 quadcore, is still more than the $399 PS3. I am curious, how much did you pay for your Blu-Ray drive half a year ago? Also, you forgot to mention what graphics card you were running in that $500 build.
Here's a challenge to anyone who thinks they can purchase or build a PC tower with specs equal or better to what is inside the $399 80GB PS3. Don't forget to include a comparable Graphics Card, Processor and a Blu-Ray drive. If you do find something, feel free to post a link. I would like to see this for myself.

8800GS 384MB, with a few modifications (Accelero S1 + voltmod). I would say the equivalent of the PS3's graphics is roughly the 8600GT or 9500GT, with my card being 2 to 3 times faster than it. The 8800GS used to be $50 after MIR before most retailers reduced the availability (the successor is the 9600GSO-Nvidia's stupid re-branding system), but I got mines at $100. My CPU price hasn't dropped much from the amazing $180 deal I got almost a year ago. I got my 4GB of RAM for about $20 in total, although recently better Corsair DIMMs popped up at $15 for the same capacity. The DVD drive was $20. I got the hard drives at $50 a piece (running dual HDDs), but now you can get a 1TB drive for the same amount of money. I got the P35-DS3L for just under $90, but you can get an awesome P45-UD3R for $10 more, or a UD3P for $20 more. The case I got was $20, and I got a free after MIR PSU (that's actually good). Totals at $510, but with the revised pricing scheme, you could probably get it at about $450 or less if you skimp on the motherboard and hard drive. I have to admit, it's difficult to beat Sony's pricing system (especially being restricted to mostly US prices).
The cheapest Blu-Ray drive is $90 on Newegg. Adding that, it would total up my old build to $570 (with savings from not buying the old drive). But I still feel that my computer is superior in terms of price/performance.
I don't know many consumers that run the PS3 as a computer, although I personally would put Kubuntu or another Linux distro on it just for the heck of it.
