I think at this time you can trust Vista and XP the most since Win 7 is still in beta and will probably stop working in august, so if you wanna be sure I wouldn't go for Win 7. If your pc can handle it well enough I'd go for Vista. If not, go for XP cuz in that case Vista won't do any good.

Ubuntu is a totally different league.

I prefer XP, Vista is too annoying and slow, 7 is still in it's early days. Ubuntu is a pretty good alternative for your needs but for ease of use I'm still more used to a Windows environment. OSX just lacks decent software.

I voted for Windows XP, it is fast, efficient and isn't filled with unnecessary junk.

I've been using Vista for the last few months and then Windows 7 for the last couple weeks. My verdict is stick with XP.

Apart from speed there is not enough difference to call 7 a different operating system to Vista. Vista/7 look pretty but are annoyingly slow (even 7 has semi-regular Vista like pauses while it thinks about opening a folder). I choose performance over looks and will be switching back to XP soon.

I use XP but i also have Windows 7. XP is good for a low spec computer. If you have a computer that can manage Vista, then skip straight to 7. If you don't "trust" 7 because it's in beta then go with XP till 7 is out.

Kinda suprised that the mac isn't more than it is. I love Linux though, and i guess i don't really run ubuntu but i guess it covers the linux category

Man, what you really need to do is just get a little partitioning going and install Xp and W7. From there if you want to tri-boot ubuntu, it gets complicated bacause of the overriding of GRUB bootloader, and lots of other shit.

i use ubuntu its fast and efficent and is awsome.
looks ugly from scratch but is super customizable.
has everything u need for everything basic and more.
no need for virus and spyware shit ether.

i also have vista installed but never boot into it...ever.
unless ur a gamer then u dont really need windows except for maybe some select apps. and u still have wine if compatible.
