One thing I am amazed at is how well W7 is being accepted so far versus how many people put down Vista, meanwhile it is practically the same OS re-badged. I guess the Mojave experiment really shows in today's world marketing is everything. I'm not complaining since I seem to be one of the few that actually understands how great Vista has been after SP1. I have used Linux, OSX, XP and Vista quite extensively, and I would have to tip my hat to Vista and Vista2(W7) regardless of how much I dislike M$.
In W7 I really like how most of the taskbar icons expand into tabs when the program is executed. What is a bit odd is that the new W7 taskbar is bigger in height, while it seems that the computer world is moving monitors into the 16:9 aspect ratios. This doesn't leave you with much viewing height in your programs unless you hit full screen. Just a thought anyway...

Maybe its just Vista with a new set of clothes. But it would definitely get a better response. Also i guess MS learnt from their mistakes. This time around the compatibility issues would be at a minimum i guess. Lets wait and see

I never had problems with vista, but it really sucked before the SP1 update. Now you just turn off the UAC and everything's fine.
The problem about people who have problems with Vista is just that they have to weak computers, but it is kind of true that Seven has lower requirements.
But I'll definately upgrade mine to W7 when the first real version is out, currently theres no need to do it.

System:
CPU: C2D E6550 @3.00 GHZ

HDD: 1TB Seagate Barracuda + 200 GB Samsung
GPU: Zotac NViDiA GTX 295
Power Util.: beQuiet! Dark Power Pro 750W
OS: Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit

Quick install, super fast for wireless connection (like 4 times fast than when the same laptop has XP installed and downloading the same files) and it wirelessly logs in during login process, not after logging in (by the time I can open the browser, it is connected to my wireless network) unlike XP which for my laptop needs a good 20 seconds after logged into Windows.
The W7 7057 I find is the same as the other W7 versions, just a little more stable.

Two nights ago I installed Vista Ultimate SP1 on my mom's old PC. It's a Pentium 4, 2.4Ghz with 1GB of SD-RAM 133, ATI Radeon 7500 gfx card, and a new 500GB IDE WD HardDrive. Unfortunately the Aero theme cannot be used due to the ancient gfx card, but I was surprised it had drivers as far back as a 7500. I tell you this thing runs really well, especially considering this PC is from 2003. Even though the CPU and Ram are considered slow by today's standards, applications load and operate at good speeds. When I say it runs well, I mean this PC even boots into it's OS faster than many desktop PCs currently being sold at Best Buy. What hinders modern PCs is that they come pre-configured and bundled with so much crap, the whole "experience" is killed.
The point I'm trying to make though is that if you know what you're doing Vista or Windows 7 can run just fine on many older PCs as well. It's definitely worth looking into before you do away with your old P4s.
